In the second part of my College Essays series, I am going to share a report I wrote about different belay devices, mainly focusing on tubular versus assisted braking belay devices. The main focus in the report is the GRIGRI 2 which at the time I had recently come to start using.
Being strapped for word/page count I neglected to mention some of the key benefits of tubular belay devices resulting in the propulsion of idea that the GRIGRI 2 is best for all use cases. So before we get to the report, here are some benefits for me of classic tubular belay devices such as the Black Diamond ATC and Petzl Reverso over the GRIGRI 2:
Ability to rappel on two strands of rope (critical for descending without simulrapping or descending with heavy loads)
Ability to belay two climbers at once from above
Low and High friction modes for rappelling or belaying
